Exercise 1: RebusesTwo weeks
A rebus is a mnemonic device, the representation of words by combinations of pictures and individual letters—a kind of puzzle or game to engage readers.
For this exercise you will conceptualise, write, sketch, produce, and design a rebus on an 11×17 tabloid portrait poster as a personal statement, a protest, or articulation of an idea. You are limited to just two of the following seven colours: black, red, yellow, green, blue, purple, or fluorescent pink.
This exercise serves as a warm-up prelude to the first full semester project, Characters: using pictographs, symbols, pictures, shapes, punctuation. You are free (welcome, even) to make it in a language other than English, if you’re prepared to have native speakers test-read your design, and to explain the multiple meanings and nuances back to us.
